Fleego Travel Insurance Comparison

July 14, 2008

Nearly one in six people have been a victim of theft while on holiday in a foreign country without having Travel Insurance. Various surveys and research have uncovered crime hotspots like Spain, France and Prague. For years Spain and France have been the top holiday destinations for Brits, but unfortunately they are also the top holiday theft hotspots.  Who says that holidays are relaxing? Well sometimes with possible flight delays, lost baggage, crammed seats and double booked rooms, our research shows that nearly one in six Brits have been a victim of theft.

The 45 to 54 year olds seem to be the most unfortunate age group, with a 25% falling prey to thieves whilst on holiday twice in their lifetime, compared to 15% of their elders (55 year olds and over), who are likely to have travelled as much.
Holidaymakers should be especially wary of leaving valuables in their hotel bedroom, villa or vehicle, as the research found that these are prime targets for thieves - having their accommodation broken into, and just over one in ten having property stolen from their vehicle.  35 to 44 year olds appear to be the most careless about leaving their hotel room, villa or car an easy target for thieves, with just under a third having something taken from their accommodation or vehicle.

Most of us now holiday abroad frequently, so it is possible that we are becoming too relaxed about looking after our possessions properly.  How many times, for example, have you gone for a swim, leaving your bag with all your valuables in full view on the beach or by the pool? Try and make sure your possessions aren’t on display in your car or hotel room, and keep an eye for people lurking around near valuables.  Try not to take valuables with you on holiday, but if you do, most hotels have a safe you can use.  Sometimes, despite taking all possible precautions, you can just be unlucky, so it is important to make sure you have the right insurance to cover you for all eventualities.

Pickpockets are also rife in European holiday destinations as just under a third 30% had items taken from their person, but didn’t notice until later.  25 to 34 year olds are the most susceptible to pickpockets, with 39% having things nicked from their bag or pocket without realising.

Nearly one in five 17% had belongings taken whilst they were close by or within sight, such as a hand bag in a restaurant that was not constantly in eye shot, but encouragingly only 7% were mugged and had things taken by force. According to fleego.com ’s research, the most important things to keep an eye on when on holiday are your cash, passport and wallet, as these were the most common items stolen from holiday makers.  Cameras or video cameras, items of clothing, hand bags and jewelry come next on thieves’ hit lists, being the most valuable and on display. Just remember thief’s are making a living from theft and no item is not worth steeling
