Sunday Struggle

May 18, 2008

I haven’t got any strong fancies today and I am struggling to find anything to put up that might even be of interest. Mangham Ripon 4.40 caught my eye on his racecourse debut over seven furlongs at Redcar last year, but he failed to build on that debut by pulling too hard in his two subsequent races. He has moved from Bryan Smart to a trainer who is new to me, D. H. Brown, I see that he has had only six runners so far, no winners but one third and one fourth. So it will be a bit of a surprise if Mangham is able to get his head in front today, but if he can be taught to settle by his new handler, he should be able to pick up a race some time in the future.

In the absence of any horses of interest, I had a look at the trainer stats for Ripon just to see if there was an angle in that way. Two stats seem of interest.

Michael Jarvis has a 40% strike rate with his 3-y-os at the track and an acceptable level stake profit of £16.67. He has just the one 3-y-o running today, TATBEEQ in the 4.40. Spotlight in the Racing Post feels that the horse sets the standard for the race but the longer trip might not suit and the horse is poorly drawn.

The other stat I picked up was that Eric Alston has a very good record with his older runners at this track, strike rate 24% and a LSP of £44.96. He has one runner in that category today, GOODBYE MR. BOND in the 4.10. The horse is a course and distance winner and had a nice pipe-opener at Beverley earlier this month.

Good luck if you decide to get involved.

Colin
